After seriously considering doing a SXSW 2010: CHAMILLIONAIRE AND PAUL WALL post, I decided to set aside my closeted top-40 playlist and go with another rap(ish) group who not only is coming to SXSW in little over a month but will also be coming to Austin in a couple of weeks (Feb 19 at ACES Lounge).

UPDATE: To purchase tickets for CHIDDY BANG on February 19th at ACE’s head over to http://chiddybang.eventbrite.com/. And PS if you use the discount code “bevo” you get $2 off your tickets!

Comprised of emcee Chiddy and DJ/producer Xaphoon Jones, Chiddy Bang is a Philly based duo who are currently (and majorly) surfing the indie rap wave in a hope to become the “kings of the basement party jam” (their words, not mine). I first took notice of the two when the kids over at Pretty Much Amazing started hyping them as “the coolest thing since the Cool Kids” about a year ago (and PMA knows their shit). So, yes, I am trying to tell you that I am way cooler than all of you because I jumped aboard this ship a year in advance (kind of like what happened with me and Lady Gaga… another story, different time), but I am also trying to tell you that I am STILL listening to them, and they are still rocking my socks off. From sampling MGMT, Passion Pit, Radiohead, Sufjan, (and more) to making their own electro/rap fusions, Chiddy Bang has always had an amazing ear when it comes to bringing in clever raps over expertly remixed indie faves as well as presenting fresh material that definitely makes an impact. Although I’ll be the first to admit that sample-based hip hop has just about overstayed it’s welcome on the music scene, I am full-heartedly, 100% behind what these kids have to offer. It’s ingenious. It’s danceable. It’s awesome.

Songs To Listen To:

Chiddy Bang—All Things Go (feat. Sufjan)

Chiddy Bang—Kids (feat. MGMT)

Chiddy Bang—Truth (feat. Passion Pit)

Chiddy Bang—Fresh Like Us

Chiddy Bang—Because (feat. Radiohead)

Random Fact about My Life:

Every time I think of Chiddy Bang, I automatically say to myself “somebody tell Roth that I don’t love college” (which is a line from Kids and a line that I will yell on the offchance that I actually hear Asher Roth’s song “I Love College”).

PS: You can definitely expect a future post the closer it comes to them coming to play in Austin at Ace’s :)
